Local Couple Living Dream, Making History

Story Created: Feb 25, 2009 at 1:56 PM CDT

During Black History Month, the country honors many who have come and gone. Today NBC 38’s Maria Jones focuses on a local couple who are making history as they live their dreams and look ahead to the future. Cedric and Daphne Hill have been married for more than two decades and are raising their family here in Columbus. The couple is the proud owners of People’s Funeral Service on Talbotton Road & Jenie’s Bridals & Formals on Wynnton Road. After working behind the scenes at Peoples for many years, Cedric was given an opportunity to become the face of his family business. And in 2002 became the owner. Cedric told News 38, “Grew up in the business and I guess if I were to say, If I had to do it over again, I probably would have pursued medical school. Because the clinical part of it is really where I started, I think that was my niche but I couldn’t stay there, ultimately I had to forge forward to the forefront of the business to give directions, give guidance.” Cedric takes pride in his work and decided to approach things differently after taking ownership. He added, “In order to bring value, credence and even knowledge to the business it would be better for us to reveal to people what we did in full capacity and have people ask questions, because you need to be. As difficult as it may be you need to be comfortable with not only with the service provider but what’s taking place.” Daphne worked at Aflac and Tsys for a combination of 23 years but is now living her dream of owning her own boutique. As a child, she loved playing with dress up with her four sisters, and now she says. “It feels wonderful! It feels natural; it feels like I’m finally in touch with everything that’s in me. And I feel like, I have the potential to achieve everything I’ve dreamed.” In January the purchase of Jenie’s made that life long dream come true. After years of working the Hill’s began to re-think their plans. They credit much of their success on staying focused and following their dreams no matter what. Daphne stated, “Each one of us, every person I believe is born with a dream and that, that dream will never die and as long as they don’t give up on it and continue to pursue it regardless of the obstacles that get in their way they continue to move forward and just seek after that dream that they will achieve it.” For WLTZ NBC 38, I’m Maria Jones. The Hill’s also credit members of their family for support as well as national leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama, who have shared their wisdom with the world. The couple has a son in High School and daughter in College. And they say they are looking forward to all the opportunities the future will bring.
