Pastor Mable A. Johnson
Pastor Mable Adam Williams Johnson, the beloved pastor, mother, sister, grandmother and friends to all, was born November 3, 1928 in Columbus, Georgia to the late Henry Wade and the late Estelle Adams. She departed this life at her residence March 15, 2009. She was the Pastor at the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia.
Pastor Mable A. Johnson was educated in the public school system in Columbus, Georgia. She joined the Mt. Pilgrim Church at the age of 8 under the leadership of Pastor Chinn. She traveled extensively with Pastor and Mother Bowden singing the praises of the Lord. She was member of the Columbus / Phenix City Gospel Choral Union, a much requested speaker and soloist.
She joined Mt. Olive Baptist in 1969. She was licensed along with four other ministers in 1975, and was ordained by Rev. Columbus Wilson in 1980. She became Assistant Pastor in 1983. She was the first woman to be ordained by the Baptist faith in Columbus. Pastor Johnson was named Pastor of New Mt. Olive Baptist Church after the death of Rev. Columbus Wilson. She served faithfully until her health failed her and her footsteps became shorter. Absent in the physical but present in the spirit. Her heart was always concerned about the house of the Lord and his people.
Pastor Johnson was mother to many children that she didn’t birth. Her caring concern drew children from far and near. Many of them who come back to Columbus made it a priority to come see her.
Pastor Johnson’s legacy includes six ministers who followed in her footsteps, who will carry on the work she began. Her children were taken to church and not sent. On Wednesday night around the fireplace, she taught them the word of God and lifted up the name of Jesus in song. Her children learned how to pray by listening to her talk to the Lord at night. She stressed getting to know the Lord and, living the life and passing on the word.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husbands the late Sam Roland Williams Sr., the late Henry L. Johnson. Sons Eugene and Jerome Williams, grandsons Carlos Williams, Dontae’ Williams and Benny Foster, sisters Willie Mae Wilson and Anna Davis, and brothers Lincoln and William Wade.

I was so sorry to hear of the lost of your mother. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. She was a real womman of God. I always love to her sing and preach when we were at your church or at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Remember that weeping may endure for a night, but joy will come in the morning light.
Love Sis. Cindy Johnson
